The Obama Administration recently announced plans to hold a forum on workplace flexibility this week at the White House. The President and First Lady will discuss the importance of creating workplace practices that allow America’s working men and women to meet the demands of their jobs without sacrificing the needs of their families.
How can so many otherwise smart and profitable companies get it so completely wrong on workplace flexibility? As discussed in a previous Thoughtful Leadership post a McKinsey survey recently reported only 30% of companies offer options for flexible working conditions.
Workplace flexibility provides individual choice and control to employees. Ideally what is it we want from our work force? Individuals who take control and assume responsibility for projects. Individuals who dare to try new things or improve upon the existing order of things. Individuals who we can put on the front lines, in tough decision making situations with our best customers. Those same best customers that can easily be driven away with one wrong word. We want all of those things and more, and yet 70% of us won't allow employees to decide what time they go to lunch. When workers feel they are in control they are actually healthier. They can live longer. One study found that those with little control over their responsibilities were at a higher risk of developing symptoms of coronary heart disease.
Imagine the stress and resentment that is created when a working Mom or Dad are able to arrange their schedule so they can have one parent stay longer with the kids in the morning, while the other parent could spend more time later in the afternoon. Yet a leader who grew up in an environment where we all start at 8, lunch at noon, and leave at 5 simply can't handle the change.
The good news is that when job control increases, the risk of coronary heart disease decreases. And parents can spend more quality time with their kids. Your health and time with your kids. It doesn't get much better than that.
